We built a digital portal through which master painters can upload the technical documentation of linen canvases, from pigment composition to the exact dimensions of the decorations. Each manually applied layer of color is recorded with the date and type of natural pigment used, and clients – popular theaters and collectors – can track the execution status of a commissioned canvas in real time. The portal eliminates paperwork and repetitive phone calls, providing a clear record of each project, from stretching the canvas on the frame to drying the last layer of ochre. The result: a more organized workflow and fewer communication errors between the workshop and beneficiaries.

How a stage backdrop was born in traditional workshops

01 Choosing the linen canvas

Craftsmen selected heavy linen canvas, handwoven in the surrounding villages. The thick, durable fiber was essential to withstand multiple layers of primer and pigments without warping.

02 Stretching on the frame

The canvas was stretched on fir or oak wooden frames, fixed with hand-forged nails. The tension had to be uniform so that the surface remained smooth throughout the work.

03 Preparing the natural primer

Crushed chalk was mixed with boiled hide glue and a little linseed oil. The primer was applied in three thin layers, each left to dry for two days, to seal the fibers and give a matte sheen.

04 Pigments from nature

Yellow and red ochre from local soils, beech charcoal for black, blue from indigo brought by merchants. Each color was ground by hand and mixed with egg or glue to adhere to the canvas.

05 Painting the landscape

The painter began with the sky and horizon, then added hills, forests, and villages. The layers overlapped from background to foreground, allowing each tone to dry before the next.

06 Fixing and mounting on stage

After complete drying, the canvas was treated with a thin layer of beeswax for protection. It was then carefully transported to the performance hall and mounted on the wooden stage structure.
